Squaw vine is an herb. The stem and leaves are used to make herbal remedies.
People take squaw vine for anxiety, diarrhea, water retention (edema), low urine output, varicose veins, sleep problems (insomnia), congestive heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, severe diarrhea (chronic dysentery), and colitis.
This herb is often used for both menstruating and pregnant women. Women take it for treating menstrual disorders, “lumpy breasts” (fibrocystic breast disease), and vaginal discharges. The Native Americans used it in the last few weeks of pregnancy to prepare for childbirth. Squaw Vine has been used for menstrual irregularities (amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and menorrhagia) and for vaginal discharge (antiseptic properties for vaginal infections). Tones both the uterus and ovaries and helps to relieve congestion.
They also use it to ease childbirth, treat depression after childbirth, and improve the flow of breast milk. Some women apply squaw vine directly to the skin for treating sore nipples.
